Et tu, Eto'o?

The recent news that Eto'o is set for an extravagant move from Barcelona to Inter Milan in exchange for Zlatan Ibrahimovic left me baffled as to why such a player would want to switch teams. Eto'o, like Cristiano Ronaldo two seasons ago, responded to winning the Champions League by wanting a change of scenery. And like Ronaldo, Eto'o will now transfer to a team that has a notoriously horrible track record in the Champions League in recent seasons. It is as if Eto'o and Ronaldo climbed to the top of Mount Everest only to go back down and try to hop their way back up on one leg. I supposed you have to admire their yearning for new challenges, but on the other hand it is confounding that a player wouldn't simply enjoy being a part of the top team in the world and continue to win trophies with them.

In my opinion Inter would benefit much more from the trade then Barça simply because I think Eto'o is a fabulous striker and £35 million can buy yet another world class player. Additionally Hleb would add depth to the right side of Inter's midfield which has been one of their weaknesses in seasons past. I'm still a little confused why Barça are so willing to give up Eto'o seeing as he seems to be the perfect fit in their team, but maybe they want to play a different style next season. To Zlatan's credit, he has an incredible ability to create his own chances whereas maybe Eto'o does not create quite as much space on his own as the Swede is able to.
