In the past I have been reluctant to write down my prediction for what the premiership table will look like at the end of the season. The reasons for this were:
a) I realized I am dreadful at predicting these sorts of things.
b) I can claim to have had better foresight than I did in reality.
But seeing as I am a benevolent blogger and would like nothing more than to see you profit from my knowledge, whether it be with a professional bookie or in an office pool, here is my prediction for the 2009/2010 Barclay's Premier League table.
1 -- Manchester United
2 -- Arsenal
3 -- Liverpool
4 -- Chelsea
5 -- Aston Villa
6 -- Everton
7 -- Tottenham
8 -- Fulham
9 -- Manchester City
10 -- West Ham
11 -- Bolton Wanderers
12 -- Sunderland
13 -- Stoke
14 -- Blackburn
15 -- Wolves
16 -- Birmingham
17 -- Burnley
18 -- Hull
19 -- Wigan
20 -- Portsmouth

man utd first?!?!
ReplyDeleteportsmouth last?!?
wigan relegated?!? (oh i guess they lost valencia..)
i think the top 8 (taking into account what transfers i think will happen):
1. ARSENAL
jk. no bias:
1. Chelsea
2. Arsenal
3. Manchester utd
4. Liverpool
5. everton
6. villa
7. City
8. fulham
...
i dont know anything about wolves/burnley, so i won't predict the relegation zone, but i do think hull will be there.
explanations:
chelsea: most depth. they might get aguero (they'd lose deco though)
next three was really a throw up
arsenal: defensive problems, but i have a great feeling about EDUARDO
man u: lost ronaldo
liverpool: don't think aquilani will replace alonso
everton: arteta + yak (though they might lose lescott)
city: they might suck at first, but they'll pull through eventually
Matt no offense but if your table is 50% correct I will attempt to eat my own hat.

From the Top: United didn't lose that much and they will have a major signing in the next few weeks. Chelsea are quite good this year and Drogba seems to want to play again ever since Guus left. Arsenal are obviously brilliant going forward, don't lose much in getting rid of Adebayor and I feel they have tightened up defensively a little as well. Liverpool lost their glue in Xabi Alonso and at this point you have to bet that Torres and Gerrard will miss their annual month or two with hamstring injuries. I hear City signed a few players, and recently Mark the Spark Hughes has actually figured out that he needs a real defense and not just 7 forwards. Everton were good last year and will be again this year - David Moyes is brilliant. Ditto for Villa although they are a little weaker and could yet lose Ashley Young. West Ham did very well under Zola and Spurs have a good squad as usual, but they won't break the top 8. Fulham lived a dream last year and they will not repeat it. Wigan are a decent side even without Valencia. Sunderland have made some good additions going forward. Bolton are just the epitome of a middle-of-the-table side. Having watched Burnley a number of times on their Carling Cup run last season I can tell you that they are by far the best of the promoted sides, and 14th place seems very attainable. Blackburn continue to get worse and not better every season it seems. Hull were very good last season until their giant collapse, but I saw enough in them to believe that they will stay up again. Portsmouth lost a good 35 Million Pounds of talent, and while they will be bad they are simply better than the remaining teams. Stoke are actually a dreadful footballing side and I expect the league will now be better-prepared to deal with their throw-in antics. The gap between the Premier League and the Championship continues to widen and Wolves and Birmingham are not good enough. Wolves basically rode former Man Utd trainee Sylvain Ebanks-Blake into the premier league, and while Birmingham shelled out 8 Million Pounds for Christian Benitez, both teams will show that you need at least 11 players of true quality to survive in the best league in the world.

There was a great article in the New York Times a couple of weeks ago about Burnley; while other huge European sides are in America playing in front of 70,000 people, Burnley plays against American 3rd and 4th division sides and in front of about 300 or 400 people. I am rooting for them.
